This is a branch of dentistry that deals with teeth correction. Teeth which are mal-aligned, crowded, mal-positioned in the oral cavity, which may lead to deferred facial growth, that which can be dealt with dentofacial orthopedics. It accounts for more than 60% of population. There are various types of orthodontic treatments – Braces or Brackets, Expansion of palate, Head gear, surgeries and etc. Braces are the most common entity of treatment modality. Various types of Braces such as metal Braces, Ceramic braces, self-locking Braces also called as Damon system or self-ligating Brackets.
Orthodontic treatment is a time taking process, usually the treatment time depends on the case severity and it may range from 8 month to 24 months. The person undergoing the treatment has to visit the Dental Clinic once every month for checkup. Treatment can be started at the age of 15 years. It’s a non-invasive procedure in the field of Dentistry. Persons with reduced skeletal growth can be treated with Functional Appliances and orthodontic head gear. In a few cases teeth extraction may be required. The Braces or the Brackets are fixed on to the teeth and with the help of pre-fabricated wires the braces are aligned and forces are applied using bands. These aid in reducing gaps in teeth, bringing tooth to its original position, de-rotation of tooth, and etc.
Removable appliances or fixed appliances are given at the end of Orthodontic treatment.
